“Chas” (later called “Adam”) runs away from home, because his mother leaves home some morning and never comes back again. Distressed Chas leaves his indifferent stepfather and his new girlfriend and decides to go south.

Declining to make money as a prostitute he nearly starves to death. After a bad accident on the street a good Samaritan brings him to an old physician, who calls him RainBoy, as he is wet like a cat in the rain.

Chas mistrusts the good Samaritan Broder, a middle-aged loner and puts him on probation. Broder passes the test and Chas asks the loner to adopt him and he even gets his new first name Adam.

The Adam and Broder now start living together as a nuclear family. In his new home and at his new school Adam soon is regarded as a special student. He is able to bring his disillusioned classmate Vic to a positive view of life and reconcile the broken relation between the jock of the football team Pete and the cutest boy in class, Trewin.

At his 16 birthday Pete realizes his dream of founding the Jugger team called Weird Varans. Jugger is a kind of sport where a team is open to girls and boys likewise. This feature is unusual to American teens as teams in football, baseball, socer etc, are either male or female (I do not even know if there is a female nation team in this sport, like in soccer). This feature and the “unamerican” type of sport attracts the attention of two students, the Judges: Gerry and Jeff. They are leaning to right-wing theories. The two Judges begin to threaten the Weird Varans.

The judges Jeff and Gerry are very different from each other. While Jeff turns to hardcore right-wing groups, soft-hearten Gerry is a disgusted from his life on the dark site of the world and ponders to commit suicide. Adam meets him at the right moment and causes his complete turnaround to a responsible student.

This chapter also shows the impossibility to characterize the type of students performing school massacres.

Also in this chapter, Broder meets Dec, the head of the police department of youth services. Both fall in love at first sight and suddenly Adam has two fathers and in addition, a granddad called Tiger, the PE-teacher of the school, being as old as the hills.

Gerry, a Junior, falls in love with Aaron a student in the junior high school. Overcoming his concerns Aaron reciprocates the affection. There are two problems, however. (a) Gerry is “white” and Aaron is “black” and (b) Jeff his former friend, develops into a green-eyed monster calling Gerry fag and worse. He abducts Gerry and threatens to lynch Aaron or both.

Gerry and Aaron are rescued by the police and both of their parents accept the relationship between the two very different teens.

In the last chapter, Vic has to leave for Australia and Adam finds a new brother, the much younger student and goal maker of the junior high soccer team Lilek.

Lilek is half-Asian and raised by his mother only. When she decides to marry a man with two sons and a daughter Lilek’s two prospective brothers didn’t accept him. Therefore he flees to Adam, Broder, and Dec and becomes a member of the RainBoy’s Family, because this family is growing, open to all distressed and hurt teens independent of race, creed, and sexual preference.
