From Chapter 4:

The boys at the river had caught a nice number of fish and were starting their return to the Manor.

James' voice came to them, loud and clear, 'Boys, you must return to the Manor house immediately.  I repeat, return to the Manor immediately.  That includes you, Neal.'

"Jeez.  What's happening, James?"

''Philip' is contacting us.  Now, hurry!'

The boys broke into a run at that.

Chapter 5

Tom, Jacob and Gary were left behind, as the boys sped off at a run toward the Manor.  When he was sure the boys couldn't hear, Tom began laughing.

Jacob said, "Okay, what's the joke?"

"It's eight-twenty," Tom stated, as if that explained everything.

"So?"

"All the kids are home from school," Tom explained.

Jacob felt like strangling his friend, or looking for a large rabbit with a pocket watch.  "Help an old man out here...  Please!"

"Just watch, and enjoy."  They hurried a bit, to catch up to the stampeding herd of boys.

The boys came running, at full speed, to the kitchen door of the Manor.  It was locked.

'Ahem, boys, restrain yourselves.  Remember, proper decorum and all that.  We do have the Queen and the Queen Mother in residence, and we certainly wouldn't want to have a collision, now, would we?'

Tom and Jacob caught up to the boys.

"Jeez, James," Neal whined.  "You said...  Wait a minute."  Neal looked at Tom and Jacob, standing there, calmly, waiting.

"Dad?"

"Yes, Neal?"

"How come you aren't all excited about 'Philip' calling?"

"I am, really, I am.  It just won't change things if I take my time or rush around like a chicken with its head chopped off."

'My, sir, isn't that a bit graphic for the younger boys?'

"Do you think so, James?  I mean, they are holding dead fish..."

'I see your point, sir.  Well, I suppose, they can carry on.  Remember, boys, proper deportment and decorum at all times, inside.  Put the fish in the sinks and go have a quick wash.  Then, to the music room, post haste.'

"Jeez, can't you just speak English?"

'I assure you, I was.'  James unlocked the door, and the boys quickly entered.

Tom was chuckling, as he followed them in.  "Nicely done, James."

'Thank you, sir.'

The fish were placed in the sinks, so they could be cleaned and prepared for breakfast.  The boys were already off, washing their hands.  They then headed to the music room.  Tom and Jacob beat them there.  They entered and took the seats left for them.  The screen was glowing brightly, with the Watkins Enterprises logo.  It then changed to the Haven Enterprises logo, and then the auditorium in the new Haven School building came into view.  The stage was filled by the folks who had been on the trip, but had returned home.  Leo was sitting in the center of the group on stage.  He was looking at a large screen at the back of the auditorium that was showing Tom and all the rest, at the Manor.

"Hi, Tom, I've missed you."

Tom answered, "I've missed you, too.  Have you got everything under control?"

"Just barely."  Of course this got several groans from the younger crowd.  Leo seemed to wake up and realize he was not alone, and neither was Tom.

Reg stepped in to save the day.  "Ma'am, if you'll permit me, I'll ask Tom to do the introductions, along with Leo."

The Queen nodded and said, "Not a problem, Reginald.  Please carry on, Tom."

Tom and Leo then began the introductions.  Tom introduced the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, her husband, the Queen Mother, Prince Charles and Prince Harry.  They each said a few words of welcome.  Then Leo began introducing the adults there, and then the kids.  The Queen was amazing, and had something nice to say to each one of them.  At the far end was Pat (with), in a very pretty dress.  Her hair was neatly done, and she had just a touch of make-up on, to enhance her looks, but not too much.  'Philip' zoomed in, so she filled the screen.

Neal muttered, "Jeez."

When introduced, she actually did a curtsy.  Her necklace swung and caught the light, so it flashed brightly.

Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, sat up straight and took notice.  "Excuse me, Patty, but what is that necklace you are wearing?  Could we have a closer look, please?"  'Philip', the Curmudgeon of Haven,  zoomed in some more, as Patty held it forward.  It was quite obviously a half-coin, but the detail was a little hard to see.  "Leo, do you suppose that you could arrange some still photos to be sent to James?  He has a little program which clarifies quite a lot."

"Hey, I've got one like that, too.  I don't wear it.  It's all I have that was from my parents," said Monty, who had been standing next to Patty.

Philip was now really interested.  "You have one too?  Er . . . ?"  Monty was next to be introduced.

"I'm Monty, your Majesties and Sirs.  Yes, I have one very much like that.  It's on a chain, too.  Not the same kind of chain, but the half coin looks like that."

"Well, when the other one gets photographed, I think it would be good if you would put yours right alongside it."

"No problem, Sir.  I'll see that it happens," Leo said, as there was a 'Harrumph.' in the background.

"Thank you, but it may be that it is of interest to you.  As you may, or may not, be aware, I am particularly interested in our history, and I am sure I came across something about two half-coins.  It may take me a while to check for it in the records, but I'll get back to you, when I find it, and let you know.  It was something that was a particular legend, I think, but I'm not certain at the moment."

"Thank you, Sir; we'll be looking forward to your answer."

"No problem, young man.  Thank you, too, Patty."

"A pleasure, Sir."

They moved on and finished the introductions.  Jason then came forward and reported that the concert had been a fantastic success, and the Phoenix Youth Foundation had made quite a bit, and should be able to do some of the things the boys had been talking about.  He thanked the group and Reg for helping get things set up.

When Jason was finished, Reg asked Eddie, "Did the shipment arrive safely?"

"Safe and sound.  It's been unloaded and stored at a safe location.  Our 'Philip' has had us install him there with a few things he claims will enhance his ability to defend.  I was a bit wary of that, but we went ahead, anyway.

All other business now finished, the Queen decided that now was the right time to have a less formal chat with the rest of the children, since they looked as if they were a bit left out.  "Now, then, all of you young people; I have to say how impressed I was with you all, at the concert in Zurich.  You, of all people, must realize how important it is to raise money to help other youngsters with problems like your own.  But it appears you have done just that by helping out at the concert.  So I want all of you to give yourselves a good pat on the back to appreciate what a wonderful part you played.  You are all, and by that I include all of you here, as well, very lucky to have found such kind and loving people to help with growing up, now.  Do not forget that there will still be many more, unfortunately, that are not as lucky as you.  However, by your efforts, I have no doubt more of them will be found and saved a similar fate.  Well done, all of you!"

The Queen Mother added, "I thought you were all very good, as well, so a 'well done' from me too!"

The Duke of Edinburgh chipped in: "I was very pleased to see you all in uniform, and I have been talking to your friends about my award scheme for older Scouts.  If, in a few year's time, you wish to participate, you may.  Now that would be a thing, taking a holiday in America to give some fine young men their Award!  I'll keep that in mind, if I hear from you," he chuckled.

Everyone at the 'Home' end smiled brightly.  They were pleased that these important people had taken the time to speak to them.  Neal suddenly stepped to the front.

"Three cheers for their Royal Highnesses: Hip! Hip!"

"Hooray!"

"Hip! Hip!"

"Hooray!"

"Hip! Hip!"

"Hooray!"

All in the Royal Party beamed with delight, and the Queen said: "Thank you so much.  Now we will leave you to talk to your friends, as I have no doubt you would wish to talk to each other for a while."  They waved and walked out of camera range.

Tom sidled up to Neal and whispered, "Well done, Neal.  Well thought out."  He went and sat down, smiling.  Neal was pleased, he could tell.

Neal then turned to the side and whispered, "Thanks James."

The Royal party had gone back to the lounge with Reg and Jane.

After a few more minutes, Linda, Lee, the twins and Lou left to return to their rooms. The twins were each carrying a baby brother, and Lee held his daughter.  Andy stayed, hoping to get a few words with Jimmy.

Martha and Nick went to the kitchens to see if the things they had ordered for tomorrow's dinner had been delivered.  There were two boxes on the counter and a note that the other things were in the refrigerator.  Nick set to making the marinade and getting the flank steaks soaking.  Martha made up her shrimp spread.

After another half an hour the conference call finally ended, when 'Philip' reminded everyone, "Harrumph, you do realize that James and I can arrange individual links, if you would like.  Just use your words and laptops, and ask.  Before you say it, Neal, Jeez.'

The boys then went to Neal's room to plan their day tomorrow.  They decided on exploring the woods some more in the morning, and then a soccer game after lunch.  Neal suggested challenging the royals.

'Ahem, Master Neal, I believe that, with the exception of Prince Harry, the others might be just a bit old to be running around the football pitch.'

"Harry is on our team!" Kit said.

Andy grinned, "I suppose we'll just have to pick sides."

They all agreed to that, and, as it was getting a bit late, they decided to call it a day, early.

Andy returned to his room and opened his computer. "Philip?"

'Harrumph, who did you expect?'

"Aw, come on, 'Philip', is Jimmy around?"

'He has been waiting for you to call, ever since he arrived home ten minutes ago.'  'Philip' faded off the screen, and Jimmy appeared.  Andy and Jimmy talked for well over an hour, catching up on the days they had been apart.

Tom and Leo were doing much the same thing.  Tomorrow was to be the last full day here, and although Tom was sad to leave his new friends, he was also looking forward to the reunion with his family.

Martha and Nick were up early, and joined the other early risers in the kitchen.  Before Pete left with the Royals, Martha brought him a box with the shrimp spread she had made the night before.  "Pete, would you be an angel and see that Gloria gets this.  We usually serve this an crackers, but I was thinking some on one of her baguettes would be heavenly."

Pete grinned, as he took the box, "I do hope you will share the recipe."

"Of course, dear,  The cookie recipe is the only one I can not fully share.  Something about my Grandmother's recipe is just... magic."  Martha's smile was filled with loving memories of her grandmother teaching her just how to make those wonderful cookies.

After Pete left, Martha busied herself, starting an all American boy breakfast for her brood.  Soon link sausages were cooking and she had a large bowl of pancake batter just waiting for the first hungry boys to arrive.  After the boys were fed and on their way to Dewsbury Hall, or the woods, to play,   Nick turned over the steaks and started baking the cornbread.  Then he was preparing the other ingredients.  Martha turned her attention to her special chocolate chip cookies; as she knew it would be, the secret ingredient was right there in the box with the rest of the supplies.  When the corn bread was done, Nick set it to cool and made up the garlic olive oil for the asparagus.  At home, he usually just used garlic powder or garlic salt, but certainly not for Her Majesty; after all, he thought, for the Royals, only the very best would do.

Now he turned his attention to the dessert he planned.  Pete had wondered at his insistence that he have regular cherry Jell-O®® available.  Nick told him he had tried sugar free, or another flavor, and they just didn't work.  Once he had four double recipe cakes in the oven, he and Martha took a break.  When the cakes were done and removed to cool, Martha helped put the corn-bread salad together, and then filled three large serving bowls and put them in the refrigerator.  The icing was put on the cakes, and they were done, for now.  Nick set off, looking for the other men, and Martha went to see if Linda needed any help with the triplets.

In the library at Dewsbury Hall, some temporary lighting had been set up, so it was easy to see everything there.  The desks had been cleaned with the adjustable suction vacuum and dusters, and were now suitable for even the Queen to sit at and not get dirty.  She was pleased, even though she had dressed casually, expecting to get quite dusty.  The books in the room were still untouched and had a layer of dust covering them.  Justin demonstrated the ultra quiet electric cleaner.  He had the work crew leave it there for the purpose of cleaning off the books as they were examined.  After Justin had cleaned off a shelf, the Queen put on her reading glasses, took a book at random and began looking through it.  "Ah!" she exclaimed, "This is something of a diary, like our modern-day blogs, and I'll lay odds that all the rest on that shelf are the same.  Look, each book has a set of what can only be initials on the spine of each one.  This one has 'A of W' and inside refers to one 'Allun of Wykham'.  I think that proves a point; hand me another, will you, and I'll check."

Mitch and Travis were talking quietly with Chris.

Mitch asked Chris, "Which desk was the one you found that letter from Alexei on?"

"The one where the Queen is sitting, why?" replied Chris.

"Well, I just noticed.  Each of these desks has a kind of compartment fitted on the inside of the desk.  You can't see it unless you look carefully.  If that desk has one like these two, then I wonder what might be inside?"

"Good lord!" exclaimed Chris.  He headed toward the Queen.  "Ma'am, may I possibly disturb you for a moment?  Mitch has come up with something we need to check out urgently about this desk."

"Good heavens, yes, of course, Chris."  She moved off the seat.

Chris immediately saw that Mitch had been right.  Having seen the others that Mitch had pointed out, he saw the catch on this one, too.  He fiddled with it a moment, there was a sudden click, and the front cover fell forward slightly.  Carefully, Chris removed it and put it out of the way on the next desk.  They all looked inside the space revealed.

With a huge smile, Travis reached forward and lifted the book from inside the concealed space, which was an identical copy of his own.  "This is it!" he yelled, startling them all.  "This is what we needed to find today!"  He showed it to the Queen.

She examined it carefully.  "It appears it certainly is.  It even has the same funny metal design built into the front cover."

Travis opened the book to page 392, and, sure enough, there in the margin was written SKW 238 4295.  The only difference, other than the fact that this book was in near perfect condition, was that there were two  photographs in this one.  One was the same photograph of Alexei's mother, and the other was of two men who looked almost as if they were twins. In actual fact, they were first cousins.

The Queen, who had never seen that particular photograph, remarked, "Oh my, how alike they are.  I have never really thought about that before.  Travis, this is Alexei's father, Tsar Nicholas II, and, on the right, my grandfather, King George V.  I know you were worried about the family ties to the Russian Royal Family, but the fact that you were given one copy of this book by your mother is proof enough.  There is no way you could have gotten your hands on this unless you were."

"Well, I won't argue with you, Ma'am.  If you say so, it has to be, I guess," he smiled.  "It makes me very much happier to have found this, though."  He indicated the book.  "I guess that really finishes up our business, here.  I don't think the other boys will like that, much.  They were hoping we would have to stay longer; we're all getting to like Pete's cooking, and we really like the countryside of England."

"I guess you'll have time to go and play with the rest of your friends, now," suggested Justin.

"Oh, yeah!" Mitch exclaimed.  "Come on, Bro, leave the book here for now; we can come back and get it, before we go back to the Manor.  Hey, Nick and Martha are cooking tonight, aren't they?  I wonder what they're doing?"

"Whatever it is, it'll be something Her Majesty will like, you realise?" Justin asked.

"Well, duh!.  Everything they cook is good.  Not always as fancy as Pete, but really good." Travis defended Martha and Nick.

"Never mind.  It'll be something you like, as well, I'm sure of that."  Mitch licked his lips, remembering some of the things they had fixed, in the past.

The Queen smiled at his words.  "Go on, boys, go ahead and play.  I can manage here, all right.  I will see to your book, if you do not return before I leave."

Travis and Mitch were soon headed to find the others in the woods, with a bit of direction from James.

About an hour or so later, with a few whoops, a cluster of bright-eyed boys appeared on the run.  Kit had found a headband and had cleverly fixed a pigeon feather in it!  Even Reg had to laugh, of course.  "It didn't take you long to figure that one, Kit!"

"Ah... my mate James suggested it."

With a big grin, Reg replied, "Did he now?  You like your mate, James, don't you?"

"Oh yeah, we get on fantastic, and he's a good friend to me."

"I've noticed."  Reg put two and two together and came up with six.  "And I'll just bet you all came in to see if there was a free cold drink going, didn't you?"  The looks on their faces said it all.

"Sussed!" exclaimed Kit.

With a sigh, Justin admitted, "It's still on free vend."  There were a lot of wide grins, and suddenly the drinks machine was surrounded.  Tom, Shorty, and Jacob suddenly appeared.

"Ah, there they are," sighed Tom, sounding relieved.  "We had visions of them rampaging through the building!"

"I don't believe they would, really," replied Justin.  "They know the rules regarding the Manor, and they have behaved the same, here."

"Oh, good.  They know the rules at home, too, but..." Tom lamented, as any parent might.

"Outside in the wood is a different thing, of course.  But we don't mind that!" Justin grinned.

They heard a car draw up outside.  It was Jane, who had brought Andy, Lou and Luke down.  Luke was having time off because it was the American group's last full day here, and he'd contacted Callum to see if he was free, today, at all.  Fortunately it wasn't his college day and Chris had approved him taking time from his other duties.

Luke had an idea.  "Andy, if you want to go and have some fun, do just that.  Let me take Lou around.  After all, we've both got the same interests, unless you are a budding artist,as well?"

"No way!  I can draw a bit, but nothing like you two," he laughed.  "Seriously, you'll be okay?"

"Of course.  As much as you care for Lou, you should have some time to yourself, mate!"

"Okay, see you in a bit."  He ruffled Lou's hair before going over to join the group of boys who were busy guzzling their drinks.

Justin turned back to Tom.  "By the way, you might want to know that Travis found the other copy of his book.  That completes his part of the story with Alexei.  The Queen is busy looking through other old books, in there."

"Ah, that's great news.  Lee will be happy about that."

The boys were having a bit of an argument over something.  Justin went over and asked what was wrong.  It turned out that some were a bit miffed that they hadn't had the chance to make Indian headbands, too.

Justin thought for a moment, then: "Well, why don't you all be the Cavalry hunting the lone renegade Indian?"

"As long I can take Tym with me as a hostage," bargained Kit.  Justin grinned, and laughed when Tym readily agreed to be the willing hostage, but gave the boy a hug.  The adults had overheard the conversation, having been mighty curious, and carefully suppressed an outburst of laughter.  However, Justin's suggestion had appeased the other boys somewhat, and they were soon ready to get on with the hunt.

Justin suggested they give Kit and Tym a two minute start to give them a chance.  He emphasized the need for caution, because they hadn't been over every bit of the woods themselves, yet, and didn't know if there might be any old wells.  He said to give them a wide berth if they came across anything that even resembled one and to let him know afterward, so they could have it investigated.  Kit and Tym were off like a shot, and the others soon set up a hue and cry, hunting them down.

*  *  *

As if by magic, the ravenous horde of boys reappeared right in time for lunch.  Gloria had her baguettes and there was Martha's shrimp spread, as well as other meats and cheeses.  The snack type lunch served them well, and everyone complimented Martha on her contribution.

After eating, Lou, Luke and Callum returned to the work area.  Luke decided to sketch Callum working on restoring one of the paintings and Lou was inspired to draw Luke, drawing Callum.  Those two sketches may one day be famous, and Callum told them so.  Both artists beamed at the praise.

Travis tracked down Reg and asked, "Sir, may I have Fred come and talk to me?  I really want to talk to him about the reward for finding the ring."

Reg replied, "I think that is an excellent idea.  James, could you ask Fred to join us when he has a free moment."

'Done, sir.  He is on his way, and should be arriving shortly.'

"Thanks, James.  You're almost as kewl as 'Philip'." Travis said.

'Almost?'  Travis laughed at the shocked indignation in James' one word reply.

Reg made his exit to give Travis and Fred a bit of privacy, knowing that James would be keeping a close eye on things.

When Fred arrived, Travis could tell he was very nervous.  Fred had been thinking all day about what the Queen had told him about the reward.

"Hey, Fred, have a seat.  I got some stuff to talk to you about.  I guess the first thing is, what is your biggest dream?"

"Ah, well, I know I'm not the smartest bloke around, but I'm not real stupid, either.  I don't think I am made to be in school and all, but I love the horses and the carriages.  I guess my biggest dream is being able to work with them."

"Hey, I think that's pretty smart.  Now, I talked to 'Philip'; he's our version of James, and we think that something called a trust fund is what we need to do for you.  Now, I've authorized a sum of money to be put in this fund, and the interest on that will allow you to live quite well.  Actually you will not need to work at all, if you don't want to.  But, if you want to, some of that money could be spent on getting a few teams of horses and buying and refinishing those coaches or others, so you could be in a business for yourself.  Possibly, Justin would hire your company to run the coaches and give guests here rides and tours.  What do you think of that?"

"Ah, that's, ah, no, sir.  It's too much.  I don't deserve that."

"Horse... hockey!  Fred, you're older than me, but I can tell you that you deserve all of it, and more.  You may not know this, but a year ago, I was basically a sex slave and was regularly beaten and abused, and an attempt was made to kill me, in a fire."  Travis showed Fred the burn scars that remained on his left leg.  "Now, it turns out that I have this huge fortune and I'm responsible for it.  So I know how you feel.  I don't feel like I deserve all this, either.  I was just getting to feel like I belonged in my new family.  I need to do this for several reasons; first, it is the right thing to do, second, I can make a dream come true, you deserve the break, and finally, I can have someone to talk to that has experienced what I have."

"If you put it like that... I accept."  Fred said, blushing.

"Okay, now, if James is anywhere near as nosy as 'Philip', he has been listening in.  So he can help you.  You work with him, and then with Justin, and everything will be great.  Another thing, don't do all this by yourself.  You can't drive ALL the coaches, and you don't have to take care of ALL the horses, and there is the tack and the stables, and lord only knows what else.  Help others; find some kids and help get them turned around.  Do for others what has been done for you.  I'll keep in touch, and if you see something that needs doing, but you can't do it, let me know.  The Phoenix Youth Foundation has just come into a 'little bit' of money, to help kids."  Travis gave Fred a big hug.

After lunch, Nick and Martha were back to work in the kitchen.  Martha set the ovens to preheat and began spooning dough onto the cookie sheets to bake her cookies.  Nick worked preparing the asparagus, snapping off the tough ends and soaking the tender part in ice cold water.  Martha's first batch of cookies was now cooling and the second was in the oven.  Nick then grated the parmesan cheese.  He needed enough for the asparagus and for the Caesar salad.  Then he began tearing the lettuce into bite size pieces for the salad.  As Martha continued baking cookies, Nick began making the bread.

The cookies finally were done, and Martha had a small mountain of them.   She then divided them onto several serving plates and set aside two tins, one for Justin and one for the adults, later.  Now the problem of having cookies left for dessert tonight.  Martha thought for a moment, then said, "James?"

'Yes, Martha.'

"These cookies are for dessert, tonight.  Do you think you can prevent them from being decimated before then?"

'That shouldn't be a problem.'

"I'm not so sure.  My crew will do almost anything to get some of these cookies."

'If I might allow each of them two cookies, I might be able to get them cleaned up and ready for dinner, too.'

Nick grinned.  "Bribery!  I like it.  You are related to 'Philip'!"

'Really, sir, it wasn't necessary to be insulting.'

Martha and Nick left the kitchen, laughing.

James, true to his word, and at the cost of two cookies per boy, had the boys all cleaned up and in the kitchen, waiting for Nick and Martha to give them the directions for serving dinner.  Before everyone gathered in the dining room, they had the cookies and cakes taken in and placed on the sideboards.  Then each boy was assigned a platter, tray or bowl to bring to the table and told exactly where to place it, and then sit.  Nick said he would signal Andy and they would know when to begin.  As the dining room filled, Nick and Martha entered and took their places.

When the adults and work crews were all assembled and seated in the dining room, Nick stood.  "It is my hope that everyone will enjoy tonight's dinner.  Pete asked us if we would fix an American meal, and so we did.  We will be serving in a style we call 'family style.'  The boys will be bringing in the food and we will pass it, after taking what we want.  Don't be shy; there is plenty.  If you want more just ask for the item you want more of, and it will be passed to you.  Everyone already has his own Caesar salad.

As if on cue, Andy led the boys into the room.  He had a platter with the carved flank steak that he had helped Nick grill and then slice.  Neal had a large bowl with the cornbread salad.  Travis and Mitch were next, with the asparagus.  Tym and Kit each had platters of meat.  John and Peter had bowls of cornbread salad.  Brian had a loaf of still warm freshly baked honey wheat bread and he was followed by Lou who had several more on a large tray on his wheelchair.  The boys set these down, spaced out around the table.

Once the boys had taken a seat, Tom stood.  "We have a tradition at Haven, to say grace before our meals.  Often we take turns and the boys get the honors.  Tonight, I would like the honor."  Tom paused and received a nod from Reg and the Queen.  "Dear Lord, we thank you for the bounty we are about to receive.  And we thank you for the friends we have made that surround this table.  May Your blessings be on each of us as we journey through life.  Amen."

Tom sat, as Amens were heard around the table.  Nick took the meat platter that was nearest to him and put several slices on his plate.  "It usually works best to pass to your right, so everything goes in the same direction.  Soon food was being passed and conversations were picking up around the table.

After seconds, and in some cases, (Neal), thirds and fourths, the boys cleared the table of the serving dishes and the dinner plates.  Then they brought in the strawberry cakes, Nick had had a wonderful time with some fresh whipping cream and delicious fresh English Strawberries.  James had found them somewhere, and surprised Nick with them.  He had not dreamed of being able to get fresh strawberries, literally fit for the Queen, at this time of the year.

Also, several plates with Martha's chocolate chip cookies were brought in.  Although everyone complained that they were too full for dessert, they wanted to try the cake and cookies they had heard about.  The cake completely disappeared, and only crumbs were left on the cookie plates.

When he was finished, John asked if he could get up.  Jacob nodded and was so proud that his son of the heart was trying so hard to remember his manners, and was doing so well.  John circled the table and gave Martha a big hug and turned and hugged Nick.  He was quickly followed by Peter, Kit and Tym.  The boys returned to their places, picked up their plates and disappeared into the kitchen.

Lee told the boys, "We need to have everything packed and at the front hall by nine thirty tomorrow morning.  So either pack up tonight, or have James wake you early, to pack.  Do pass that on to the others and maybe help them a bit."

The boys decided to get packed up tonight.  When they got to their rooms, the clothes they had worn that day were clean, and neatly laid out on their beds.  After packing, Brian, Mitch, Travis, John, Peter, Tym and Kit were talking.

Brian commented, "It sure is kewl being here with adults that thought we were okay."

Mitch replied, "I guess I felt like Dad and Mom, well they kind of, like, had to love us.  These people knew we were all messed with, and they, like, accepted us."

John piped up, "Even, the fucking Queen of England."

'Ahem!'

"Oops, sorry James, kinda slipped out."

Peter hugged John, "It's hard to believe.  I never thought anybody would like me, again."

Travis stood and walked towards the door, "I'll be back, guys.  I got some thinkin' to do."  He walked the halls, not really paying much attention to where he was.  His thoughts were so confused, here, everyone was treating him like a brother, and then like the Tzar of Russia, for crying out loud.  He found himself standing outside Chris' room, so he knocked.

Chris, Pete and Justin were getting ready for bed, when Travis knocked.  Chris, checking to make sure that all of them were decent, called, "Come in?"

Travis opened the door and timidly entered.  "Look guys, I'm sorry to bother you..."

"That's ok, Travis.  What's up?"

"Well...  A lot of us were talking together as we were packing this evening, and we came to a decision."

"What was that then?"

"I...  I don't know quite how to tell you this."

"Just tell it like it is...?"

"Okay.  It's like this.  You know we were all either unwanted or abused kids...?"

"Well, yes...  So?"

"Before we came here, I guess we were all just getting used to thinking that maybe life was going to be okay now, and that our new dads and moms, in some cases, were real good people..."

"Well, they are, aren't they?"

"Oh yeah, but we weren't sure that other people would think like that.  Now, we've met you, and the Royal Family, too, and everybody has been so wonderful to us.  We never thought we were worth that sort of attention."

"Ah," remarked Justin, "I think I've had a similar conversation to this, with John and Peter.  John was a bit down and feeling a bit worthless."

"Look here," Chris added, "let's get this straight, once and for all, and this goes for all of you.  None of you are worthless, or unwanted.  Your parents love you more than you think; did you realise that?  Well I did, because I talked to some of them.  All that happened to you, and whatever you were forced to do to survive, is in the past.  Live for the future, Travis, and all your friends.  We don't think any differently of you than we do our own workers who now live with us.  A few are even really close friends, if you did but know it.  So let's not hear anyone say, 'Why do they bother with me?' any more.  All right?"

"Okay."  Then he flung himself at each of them in turn, and after a cuddle with Pete, there were  tears in his eyes.  "Thank you, all of you.  You don't know how much it means to hear you say that."

"Oh yes, we do.  You know Charlie and Benjamin down at the Hall?  Would you say they were pretty cool, and could easily look after themselves?

"Oh yes; they're pretty cool looking guys, too."

"Mate, they would have let us use their bodies just to be safe somewhere, if we'd wanted.  Of course we'd do no such thing.  We might have hugged and cuddled them some, while they got over it.  They even slept in with us, so they felt safe.  That's how much they needed someone to care about them."

Travis sat there for a moment thinking.  Then he realized Pete had laid down on the bed, right on one side.  He looked between the three of them, and the size of the bed, and suddenly things clicked into place.  "You mean...?"

"Don't go there, Travis.  Keep those thoughts to yourself, please."

"Oh, I will, I will.  Oh, suddenly it all makes sense.  But the three of you?"

"Yes, but leave it there."

"It just makes sense to me, now.  I couldn't figure it before, that was all."

"You're not old enough to have to worry about it yet, Travis.  Now, go to bed and get some sleep, eh?  Just be safe in the knowledge that people really do love and care about you and your friends."

"Thanks, guys."  Travis left and returned to his room then smuggled up to Mitch and joined him on an adventure in Valdemar©.

Pete and Justin were up early and started preparations for feeding everyone.  Reg was up, making sure everything was ready for the early visitor.  He was hoping to have completed this little bit of business before his guests had to leave for the airport. Lee had asked Reg to mention Travis' situation, since there were many similarities.

The boys were of mixed emotions the next morning.  They were sad to be leaving their new friends, England and Pete's cooking, and yet excited about going home and seeing all their old friends again.  They dragged their bags down to the entrance hall and went to have their last bit of Pete's cooking.  Tom was missing Leo, but sad to leave the Royals, the group and Reg.  Poor 'Philip'; Reg had a positively evil grin, as he filled Tom in on some of the features of a Watkins computer.

At nine o'clock precisely, a car swung in through the gates.  Anticipating his prompt arrival, Reg was almost at the door when the bell rang.  He opened the door and welcomed his visitor in.  After the brief meeting, the guest left just as the motor coach was arriving.  As the boys were taking all the bags to the coach, Lee asked Reg if that was the barrister he had mentioned.

"Yes, indeed it was, Fredrick Clemence.  Said he knew just the man for you, in western Pennsylvania, distant cousin, almost the same name." Reg replied.

Reg wondered at Lee's sanity, as he broke up laughing.

When the coach was all loaded with all the luggage and bits and pieces they were taking with them,  the Royal party wished them well and a safe journey, and Prince Philip reminded Tom he would be in touch, as soon as he had the necessary information.

Then came the time for good-byes.  There were handshakes, hugs, a few tears, from all the boys.  Justin found he got almost crushing hugs from John and Peter as did Chris from Travis.  Jenkins and  his apprentices had appeared to say goodbye, and Luke made a particular fuss of Lou, who hugged and kissed him!  Luke held him while his chair was loaded on the coach and then gave him to Andy who carried him on board.  Neal got a hug and a 'yes' from Pete, whom he'd asked if they could come again, sometime.

Once everyone was safely on board the coach, Reg, Chris, Pete, Justin, Kit and additionally Prince Harry climbed on too.  He'd had his father's permission and the Queen had given him a special delivery package that had arrived early that morning.  Jane stayed behind to look after the Royals.  The boys were all very excited to see that Harry had joined the farewell party going to the airport.  They would be traveling by their own private jet, HAVEN 1, that 'Philip' had obtained for their use.

Once they were under way, Harry opened the package and distributed the diplomatic passports that had been made for the Harrises.  That was a surprise and a half!  The traffic that morning wasn't too bad, until they got near Gatwick, when it crawled a bit, until they got to the turn-off for the private terminal.

It didn't take long to clear through Customs at all, since Prince Harry stood watching the officials, and the Harrises showed their diplomatic passports.  They virtually cleared them all through without checking anyone, even Neal!  As it was only a short distance to their plane, they walked across the tarmac.  As they neared the plane, however, there was the sound of racing engines and squealing tires accompanied by blue and red flashing lights.  Tom's immediate thought was that Neal had managed to do something!

But Chris nudged Harry and shouted something and both he and Harry took off at the run......

Valdemar © Mercedes Lackey

Of course, there is a cliff hanger.  You don't suppose it is that stupid reporter, again?  No, wait, it can't be him; he's still in lock up.  I wonder what Cracker Writer has cooked up this time.  Well, actually, I don't wonder, because we came up with this together.  We're not telling either, not even our editors.

The things Nick and Martha prepared and served are some of the favorite dishes from our Evil Author meetings.  I have included the recipes, after the editor's notes, so, if you are so inclined, you may try them out for yourself.  Try not to eat too much at once.

Thanks to TSL for his suggestions and corrections.

As always, I'd like to know what you are thinking about the story.

Editor's Notes:

Well, since I got this first, this time, I think he means me.  As you might have guessed, this will be pretty much the final chapter of the combined story line, at least for the present.

I, for one, very much enjoyed seeing these two story lines intermingle. For those of you who have been reading both stories, you already knew that there were some crossovers, including the use of James technology to build  'Philip'.  I am sure that there will be further visits between stories.

I do suppose we will have to resolve the tiny little cliffy, before we diverge into separate story lines, but then, unless everyone is killed off, the stories should go their separate ways.

I certainly hope that the boys take to heart the advice about improving their self image.  They certainly are well loved and cared about.  The funny thing was to see Travis give Fred the same advice that Chris gave to him.  I see it happen so often, we all think less of ourselves than others do, and we think more of others than they do of themselves. I am also glad that Travis got everything he was entitled to, and I am sure that he will use his bounty wisely and lovingly.

Lou is reveling in all the attention he has been getting lately, and he is totally pleased that he got help from Luke.  Both of them have real talent, and Lou has some really special talent, for sure.

At least John managed to hold off saying any expletives, while in the Queen's presence.  I am sure that James forgave him, though.

I do wonder what all the sirens and flashing lights were about, and why were Harry and Chris running into the heart of the situation?

I suppose we will just have to wait till next time to find out.

Associate Editor's Notes:

It's been fun, visiting England and meeting the Royal family, but I think we're all eager to get home again. Remember Dorothy, from "The Wizard of Oz"?  "There's no place like home, there's no place like home!"  Two of our travelers, in particular, can't wait to get back-Tom and Andy.  Wonder why.

Travis seems to have benefited most from the trip.  Not only was he convinced that he is the rightful heir to the Romanov personal fortune, but he has learned that he is a worthwhile and loveable person in his own right.  It was wonderful to see him passing on some of his wealth to Fred, but he was able to help him realize that he, too, is a worthwhile person.

I may have to throttle our author, if he doesn't stop ending chapters with cliffhangers!  Just when it looked as if the group was going to get out of England safely, we have flashing lights and sirens, and our English friends running-toward or away from the authorities?

Since we are ending our English trip, we will be saying goodbye to CrackerWriter, and I'd like to thank him personally for all the help he gave to St8mayb with this section of the story.  Let's hope that he returns now and then with more insights into British life and customs.

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
¼ teaspoon pepper
⅛ teaspoon garlic powder

In a small mixing bowl, beat softened cream cheese until fluffy; gradually beat in lemon juice.  Stir in remaining ingredients.  Chill to blend flavors.  Garnish as desired.  Serve with crackers or fresh vegetables.  Refrigerate leftovers (not going to happen with this bunch-there won't be any leftovers!).

Flank Steak                                                                                                           Str8mayb

Marinade:

1 tablespoon vinegar

Mix ingredients and place steak (flank, London broil or sirloin) in large zip-lock bag pour marinade over it and let stand 24 hour;turn over at least once.

Note: I don't measure.  I put more dark brown sugar, whiskey and vinegar in than what the recipe calls for.

Cut steak in thin slices, diagonally across the grain.

2½  cups whole wheat flour
2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1 tablespoon salt
1 cup water
1 cup milk
½ cup honey
3 tablespoons butter
1 egg
All-purpose flour

In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of bread flour, 1 cup whole wheat flour, yeast and salt.  In a small saucepan, heat the water, milk, honey and butter to 120º to 130º.  Add to dry ingredients; beat just until moistened.  Add egg; beat until smooth.  Stir in remaining whole wheat flour and enough remaining bread flour to form a stiff dough.

Turn onto a surface lightly dusted with all-purpose flour; knead until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes.  Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top.  Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.

Punch dough down; let rest for 10 minutes.  Turn onto a lightly floured surfaced; divide into thirds.  Shape each into a loaf.  Place in three greased 9-inch x 5-inch x 3-inch loaf pans.  Cover and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes.  To tell if the dough has doubled, poke dough down ½-inch; if it dents, the dough has doubled.

Bake at 350º for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown.  Cover loosely with foil if tops brown too quickly.  Remove from pans to wire racks to cool.
